Who is Mammootty?

Everyone better knows Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail as Mammootty. That is his stage name. He is an Indian actor and film producer who works predominantly in Malayalam movies. He has acted in over 400 movies mainly in Malayalam but also some in Hindi, English, Tamil, Telegu, and Kannada.

Family of Mammootty

Mammootty was born on 7th Septembedr 1951 in Chandiroor in Travancore (now Kerela). Although born there, he was raised in a village called Chempu near Vaiukom in Kottayam district which is also in Kerela. He was born in an Indian, middle-class, Muslim family. This actor’s father was Ismail who had a wholesale business of garments and rice (which his family also cultivated). His mother’s name was Fatima, a housewife. He was the eldest of the three sons Ibrahimkutty and Zakariah. He also had three younger sisters named Ameena, Sauda, and Shafina.

Mammootty married Sulfath in 1979, and also has a daughter named Surumi who was born in 1982, and a son called Dulquer Salaam who was born in 1986. His permanent residence is at Kochi, Ernakulam. He lives there with his family. Mammootty’s younger brother Ibrahimkutty is also an actor in Malayalam films and TV serials. His son Maqbool Salaam is also a film actor.

The early life of Mammootty

Mammootty went to Government High School, Kulasekharamangalam, Kottayam for his primary education. During the 1960s, he attended the Government School of Ernakulam because his father moved the family to Ernakulam. He did his pre-university course at Sacred Heart College, Thevara. For his degree, he attended Maharaja’s College Ernakulam. He even graduated with an LLB from Government Law College, Ernakulam. Mammootty practiced law for two years too in Manjeri.

Mammootty’s acting career

Mammootty initially used the stage name Sajin in his early films. When he established himself as the lead actor in the 1980s, his major breakthrough came with the commercial success of the 1987 film New Delhi. This actor appeared in the neighboring industries as well. In 1990, he entered Tamil cinema through Mounam Sammadham in 1990. In 1992, he entered Telegu cinema through the movie Swati Kiranam. He even entered Bollywood through Triyathri although his debut as a lead was in Dhatriputra in 1993. In 2012, he debuted in Kannada cinema through the bilingual film Shikari. He also acted in Indian English film Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in 2000.

Was Mammootty’s wife behind his success?

Last month, this great actor completed 50 years in the industry. When his career is looked upon, it shows that his acting career took off after his marriage to Sulfath. It was in 1979 itself that his first full-fledged role as a lead actor in Vilkanundo Swapnangel was a super hit at the box office.

He is considered a “living legend”. He has won three National Film Awards for Best Actor, seven Kerala State Film Awards, and 13 Filmfare Awards South. In 1998, he received the Padma Shree award from the government for his contribution to the art. Mammootty has no shortage of films. Despite he being 70, directors make a bee-line to sign him.
