A lawyer accused the biggest YouTuber in India, Carry Minati, of making objectionable remarks against women. He supposedly did it in the roast videos he puts up on YouTube. Carry Minati started his channel with game commentaries. However, the 20-year-old YouTuber rose to fame because of his roasts. He was just 10 years old when he started to make YouTube videos.
As of today, he has a total of 31.9 million subscribers. He has also expanded into making comedy sketches and releasing music videos along with his brother Wily Frenzy. Carry Minati’s Youtube channel has several hit videos. They are ‘The Awesome place We Call School’, ‘Marry your Dream Partner’, ‘Film The Flare’ among others. Since joining the platform in 2014, he has got more than 2,531,555,816 views.
Gaurav Gulati, a Delhi-based lawyer, has filed a complaint against this very YouTuber whose real name is Ajay Nagar. He did this at the Civil Lines police station with the Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police, North District. This criminal complaint was registered under sections 354, 509, 293, and 3/6/7 of the Indecent Representation of Women Act 1986. It was also registered with Section 67 of the IT Act 2008. Police will file the complaint on the grounds of the “indecent representation of women.” It demanded that an FIR be filed against the YouTuber.
Now, what is the Indecent Representation of Women Act? It is an Act of the Parliament of India which the law enacted to stop indecent representation of women. This could be in the form of advertisements or in publications, writings, figures, paintings, or in any manner. The law on obscenity is codified in sections like Section 292, Section 293, and Section 294. Despite these, people represent women indecently which has the effect to denigrate women. It is also derogative of women. So, different legislation is necessary to prevent such representations of women effectively in books, pamphlets, advertisements, etc. This is where this particular Act comes in and this is why the Parliament made this Act.
In his complaint, Gulati accused Carry Minati of “making sexually colored remarks against women, publishing objectionable content on his YouTube, roasting and representing women in an indecent manner and publishing obscene language and gestures regarding women” on his channel.
According to reports gathered by the news channels, Carry Minati is soon going to make his Bollywood debut with Amitabh Bachhan and Ajay Devgan starrer film Mayday. Rakulpreet also has a role to play in this film.
The complaint read, “The complainant came to know about various shameful and outrageous roasts of a YouTuber Carry Minati @AjayNagar on 06/09/2021. There are various vulgar and outrageous languages use about the women fraternity on his YouTube Channel. The language being used by the YouTuber is so cheap.”
