Technological progress has advanced in many facets. Now, it is very easy to get in touch with a friend through a simple free message or any of the social networks that exist, but one sector that has seen this progress is the entertainment industry.

This has made great strides from a few years ago until now, thanks to these advances. Games are no longer seen in black and white or have a distorted image of their protagonists; now, they are much more colorful and have incredible graphics.

Below you will discover how video games have evolved since their launch and how technology has helped in their evolution.

Evolution of video games

It’s been a long time since Magnavox launched its first tabletop video game console on the market. It was named Magnavox Odyssey. Its creator was Ralph Baer, who wanted to design an entertainment device for all ages. It was then in 1972 when the console, Magnavox Odyssey, was put on sale. Its handling was very different from what we are used to today. The games were complemented with chips, dice and cards, and there was only a wheel-shaped controller to play with.

However, it was not until four years later that the console that

the Atari 2600 was born. This console was, is and will be desired for many generations. Compared to the Magnavox Odyssey, the Atari 2600 had cartridges (the games) that could be changed. In this way, it allowed the player to enjoy different types of games. The technology at that time was evolving in such a way that along came competition. The famous companies, Nintendo and SEGA, positioned themselves in the market as a new form of entertainment, especially with the iconic Nintendo Entertainment System, better known as the NES. Such was the popularity that a couple of years ago, they decided to re-release the console with some of the best games incorporated. Nevertheless, they are not manufactured anymore and they must be looked for in trusty gaming shops.

As time progressed, technology kept advancing with the 256-pixel, 16-bit consoles and, later, the 32-bit and 54-bit consoles.

Almost 20 years later came the popular console that positioned itself in the market as the best. PlayStation launched a console with video games on CD and the possibility of saving games on a memory card.

The competition came between 1998 and 2001 when PlayStation 2, SEGA Dreamcast and Xbox arrived. These included technology like never before: Blu-ray readers, hard drives inside the console that saved video games digitally and a CPU. Later, it added internet connectivity. Today, consoles can be integrated with virtual reality.

With the aforementioned development of consoles, entertainment industries introduced more advancements: cinema, television and casinos, to name a few. For example, in the case of casino games, going to a physical place to have fun. You can get a better perspective of the advances by going to betting sites reviews pages. There are a great number of casinos that offer games, such as slots, slot games or even live dealer games. The latter was never imagined before. In addition, with technology, it is now possible to gamble using an e-wallet or a credit card. However, it is not only casino games where technology has made the leap, but also in sports betting.

Technology that has helped the video gaming industry

Due to technological advancement, many of our daily tasks, such as education, communication or work, have been transformed. As we have seen, one of those advancements that had the greatest impact on our society was entertainment.

A good example would be virtual reality (VR). VR allows the player to immerse himself in the story from a first-person perspective. The highlight is the realistic graphics that allow for a unique experience.

Another example can be seen in mobile entertainment. Programmers began to develop games where augmented reality was applied. The most successful game so far was Pokémon GO, where the user became the protagonist in order to hunt Pokémon that were loose on the street.

There is no doubt that technology got in our way. Now it is difficult to differentiate between the virtual world and the real world. Now there is the question: what will be the next technological challenge in entertainment?
