History of International Civil Aviation Day

The day has been celebrated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation since 1994, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (ICAO), which was established in 1944 to establish co-operation and uniformity in aviation internationally.

The UK was initially unwilling to accept International Aviation Day and claimed that it didn’t fall within the guidelines of the ICAO and was a waste of UN resources, but now takes part, with air displays for example and fundraising from spectators, as the Battle of Britain anniversary falls within about a week of International Civil Aviation period.

The purpose of the International Civil Aviation event is to help create worldwide awareness of the importance of international civil aviation to the social and economic development of countries. Along with that, it is celebrated to promote the safety, efficiency, and regularity of international air transport. It is also to raise awareness of ICAO’s role in helping to cooperate and realize a global rapid transit network at the service of all mankind.

The ICAO council establishes every five-year special anniversary theme for International Civil Aviation Day and for the full four years intervening period the council selects a single theme.

What is the theme in 2021?

The theme for International Civil Aviation Day 2021 is “Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development.” The council has decided to keep the same theme until the year 2023.

Who does the International Civil Aviation Organization work with?

The International Civil Aviation Organization works closely with other UN members including the World Meteorological Organization, the International Telecommunications Association, the Universal Postal Union, the World Health Organization and the International Maritime Organization.
