The famous writer Buddhadeb Guha is no more among us. He left for his heavenly abode on 29th August 2021.
Who was Buddhadeb Guha?
Buddhadeb Guha was an Indian writer. He wrote fiction stories in Bengali. His works of fiction will be etched forever in the heart of the Indians. This eminent writer was born on June 29, 1936, in Kolkata. He spent his childhood in the Barisal districts of East Bengal which are now in Bangladesh and Rangpur. His childhood experiences deeply affected him. Even his childhood travels left a deep imprint on his mind. These were reflected in his works later on.
Buddhadeb Guha’s career
This famous personality studied at St. Xavier’s College of the University of Calcutta. His days in Rangpur, Jaipurhat, and Barisal are depicted in his works of the Rivu series. Some of these Rivu books are dedicated to friends from his youth. Buddhadeb Guha also created a fictional character called Rijuda who explores jungles. This character also has a side chick called Rudra. The jungles that he wrote about were mainly in Eastern India just as he experienced in his youth.
Buddhadeb Guha’s works
This noted writer wrote a lot of novels and short stories in his lifetime. The critics acclaimed them highly and they won him a lot of fans from across the sub-continent. They also fetched him several awards including Ananda Puraskar in 1976 along with Sironam Purashkar and Sharat Purashkar. ‘Madhukari’ (Honey Gatherer) is one of his most noted works. Others include ‘Koyeler Kachhe’ (Near the Koel Bird) and ‘Sobinoy Nibedon’ (The Humble Offering).
His works gave rise to many movies. An award-winning Bengali film ‘Dictionary’ was based on two of his works namely, ‘Baba Howa’ (Being a Father) and ‘Swami Howa’ (Being a Husband). The Rijuda we talked about earlier was a hunter and conservationist.

By profession, this eminent writer, Buddhadeb Guha was a charted accountant. He was also a classical singer and a very skilled illustrator as well. He took up writing books because he wanted to share his childhood experiences with other people.
How did Buddhadeb Guha die?
Earlier, in the month of April, Buddhadeb Guha suffered from Covid-19 and his daughters hospitalized him for 33 days. His wife, the eminent Rabindra Sangeet exponent Ritu Guha had already died in 2011. She left behind two beautiful daughters and their father. His daughters again hospitalized him on 4th August. It was because he complained of breathing trouble and the doctors also diagnosed him with a urinary tract infection. This famous writer died of post-covid complications at 11:25 pm at a private hospital on Sunday, 29th August. He had suffered a massive cardiac arrest. He was 85 at that time.
